Construction & the Built Environment

Curriculum Intent 2025-6

Construction and the Built Environment curriculum is to provide learners with a foundation in the core principles within the construction industry. The curriculum also provides practical and technical knowledge skill building. For some, these skills may be transferred to preparation for adulthood. From skills developed in the classroom that may be transferred to DIY tasks or to those that may choose to progress onto college courses and/or apprenticeships to follow a career within construction. The programme is designed to reflect the needs of the modern construction sector, incorporating both traditional trades and emerging technologies to prepare students for further study, apprenticeships, or entry-level employment as stated in the Gatsby benchmarks.

We aim to inspire learners by linking theory to practice skills with hands-on learning, employer engagement, and real-life problem solving, where students will learn how to repair and maintain a building's fabrication. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, students develop essential skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and health and safety awareness, while gaining a clear understanding of the environmental and societal impact of construction activities. Learners will cover a variety of building skills, including brick laying, joinery skills, plumbing applications, electrical installation, plastering, painting & decorating, and electronics and engineering.

The curriculum focusses on independent enquiring, creative thinking, reflective learning, team work, self-management and effective participation, building resilience throughout the course. By challenging students to take responsibility for their learning and to set high standards for their personal development, we ultimately, aim to empower the individual. Our intent is to produce skilled, confident, and learner ready individuals who are equipped to contribute positively to their future lives and maybe contribute to the construction industry in the future.
