Health & Social Care
Curriculum Intent
The health and social care curriculum is intended to give students a range of learning experiences that allow them to develop fundamental values, knowledge and skills that underpin careers in the health and social care sector.
Values that students develop include; respect for the rights of the individual, unconditional positive regard and confidentiality.
Students build knowledge of the range of health and social care providers that support individuals across the human lifespan. They develop an understanding of the different types of caring roles and the skills required for each. For example, students learn about the creative skills that are needed by a play worker caring for very young children and compare this with the scientific skills needed by a pharmacist to support older adults to access their medication.
Communication skills are central to the health and social care curriculum and, as such, students will learn about themselves and others through experiences which build self-awareness, understanding of non-verbal and verbal cues, as well as the different types of technology which support communication.
By taking part in planned, sequential health and social care visits to providers, students are able to see health and social care ‘in action’, apply their knowledge and skills, and reflect on their experiences.
